Words Matter

Laying Goals

I have been thinking a lot about goals lately. Goals are indeed important in our lives because they help motivate us, organize us, prioritize the desires of our lives and allow us to advance our ambitions.

But sometimes people forget that achieving goals does indeed take effort. You have to spend time on them and you have to regularly identify the barriers or challenges that are hindering your progress.

It’s important to remember that goals are like eggs: they don’t hatch as soon as you lay them.

Proverbs 2:2

Tune your ears to wisdom and
concentrate on understanding.

Can't Not Do

The Power of Noticing: What the Best Leaders See

 Max H. Bazerman (Simon & Schuster, 2014)

This book, written by Max H. Bazerman, a professor at the Harvard Business School, is an amazing read and clearly relevant to the difficult times we are presently experiencing.

There are many crucial thoughts and ideas that jump out to you as a reader. For example, Bazerman states, “It is the responsibility of leaders to notice when things are going seriously wrong in their organization.” Think of all the business and social disasters that have occurred because of a lack of foresight.

Bazerman also contends that successful leaders “prevent predictable surprises” and offers good advice for avoiding them:

  • Recognize the threat
  • Prioritize the threat
  • Mobilize action

This book is a must-read for anyone seeking to strengthen their noticing mindset.
